Standup Comedy? Now it Makes Sense to Gabriela

With so much talk going around the industry and Miami Ad School itself these days about the essential skills that can be taught through improv and standup comedy, we thought it a good idea revisit this student story. Gabriela Pezo's standup set (playing above) was a revelation, everyone present saw a more confident, outgoing person onstage that night. In her own words:

Hi Pippa and Ron,

I just have to share this with you. I want to thank you so much for Miami Ad School.

I spent the most amazing times with the craziest, funniest people I know. Wow, what an experience! And, as I said on the the day of my graduation, Standup Comedy was the best I took in Miami Beach.

I put my standup act on the web for my friends and family in Ecuador to see. I'm not ashamed to say I'm very proud of that moment, because only a person who has been in that position will know the pain and pressure that comes into standing up and being funny, not trying but being.

For some reason on one of my interviews here in Dubai, the topic of the standup comedy act came up and the ECD wanted me to perform my jokes right there and then. I choked but remembered that I had put it on youTube and played it from there. He loved it. And although he was unsure of hiring me because my book was "too Americanized," he did!

So thank you for having a standup comedy in the curriculum, it made no sense to me why would we have to take such and now it is the one I refer to the most. And also for having G. Michael as the teacher. He's amazing.
